i lived in chicago without a car and rode a bike everywhere for YEARS. about twelve miles a day to and from school. winters too. but then my knee started hurting so i moved to evanston ane got a car. when you are on a bike you are always waving your fist at people in cars - and when you are in a car bike riders are generally annoying. keep us informed.

I had the pleasure of experiencing the Starbuck's Oatmeal first-hand on Thursday morning. I was actually pretty stoked about it. I was meeting a friend there with whom I would be carpooling to the Ann Arbor Amtrak station with en route to Chicago. I was running late as usual, and had no time to make said Oatmeal at home. I arrived at Starbuck's knowing that I'd order a chai latte and THINKING that I'd have to settle for some crummy muffin for breakfast. But to my delight, there was The Oatmeal! And it was pretty tasty! I opted for the trio of nuts topping. It went pretty well w/ the chai. It was a pretty happy experience. When you're livin' in the suburbs, Starbuck's is pretty much the most happening place in town. I guess this was a lot to say about oatmeal.

This was almost like sitting down with a cup of good coffee and philosophizing (is that a word?) with you. I can relate on all levels of what you're saying. It takes a lot of strength to recognize that what is important to you is possibly shifting. Decisions like these are so difficult, and I admire your confidence in your choices. Choosing Love has got to be the hardest and scariest road to follow. Kudos to you for being brave enough to give it a chance and believing in it. There is definitely nothing un-feminist about that. : )

Coffee Slut, your post from yesterday is so perfect for my day today... I want to scream at the top of my lungs right now in frustration... I keep trying to tell myself to take a deep breath and relax, take on the day, blame it on your period, but nothing is making this week better! Argg... I know what I need to do, I need to meditate... Do you meditate? When I used to do it I had amazing results in my life... Not just with the way I felt but with communication, and self-control... little things started not to bother me as much... Not that you want my input, but I just want to let you know that I totally understand and it is a crappy feeling... Good post, tomorrow is a new day. (BTW, this is AlexandraF from guidespot.com. What can I say, I am a fan of your guides!)

You're not invisible. People just move past you at such a pace that they don't see anything but a blur as they pass by. Oh yeah, and they usually do so without turning their brains on first. Consider yourself blessed to be a considerate person with a brain, unlike the many you share those city streets with!

Days like that are the best. I wonder if the penthouse-owning people took full advantage of the sights and smells and sounds around them like you did? Sometimes when you have a lot of big stuff you miss out on a lot of little stuff. That's my wisdom contribution for the day. : )

I've gotten a lot of celebrity look-alike comments comparing me to this one particular actress and I always feel weird about that too. I think it is a flattering comment and then I think, "oh wait, maybe they mean I am like the ugly step-sister version of this person," and then I would rather I not look like anybody at all!
I completely agree with your disappointment in how wrapped up we get with celebrity lives. What ills me is all of the truly inspiring people out there we aren't reading about- scientists who are researching cures for AIDS (my aunt being one of them, how come she isn't in Us Weekly?) or amazing teachers, botanists, barbers or for that matter, baristas? ; )

I love this post. It is nice to hear someone be honest about where they are in life, because there are so many people out there in the same situation (myself included.) I found myself thinking "Amen, Sista!" about 12 times as I read this. Because I'm in the same boat as you, I don't have any advice about how to get out of it. Just know you're not alone and if nothing else that you've got friends who know you ARE a fabulous somebody and who would in a heartbeat pay you to do whatever it is you want to do if they had the money. : )
